Spaying and Neutering for Pets

Contact our team for additional information or to schedule your pet's appointment.

Spays and neuters are routine procedures that we offer at our hospital. They are elective surgeries that prevent pregnancies while providing other health benefits. Pets who don’t have the procedure early risk developing uterine infections, testicular, mammary, or prostate cancers, and sexually transmitted diseases. The surgeries also help lessen the overpopulation of stray animals in shelters. To get this procedure for your pet, call us at 289-278-6001.

What is the difference between spay and neuter surgery?

The main difference between the two is that spaying is performed on female pets, and neutering is done on males. During neuter surgery, a small incision is made near the scrotum to remove the testicles. Spay surgery removes the uterus and ovaries from female pets. These procedures prevent your pet’s ability to reproduce.

At what age can my pet have the surgery?

Most pets will have the procedure when they are around 6 months of age. At 6 months, most pets will begin to sexually mature and go into heat. This is when they will start to spray furniture, get aggressive, and try to escape to mate with other pets. After 6 months, pets of any age can get the surgery if they are healthy enough.

How long will it take my pet to recover?

It will take approximately 14 days for pets to fully heal after the surgery. It is essential that your pet gets optimal post-op care to prevent any complications like infection or bleeding, which may lead to them needing an emergency visit. Here are some tips to ensure your pet heals properly:

●    Monitor the surgical site. Ensure there are no signs of swelling, bleeding, or discharge by preventing your pet from licking or scratching the area.
●    Restrict your pet’s exercise. Certain activities like running or jumping can cause the incision to reopen and result in pain.
●    Don’t allow your pet to swim or give them baths during recovery. Wait until your veterinarian has given you the go-ahead or after 14 days.
